The border policemen within the Coast Guard acted in the field of prevention and countering fish poaching in the competence area, identifying on the Black Sea a Turkish fishing vessel with seven sailors aboard, who were carrying out fishing activities without observing the legal provisions.
On 10.10.2013, around 10.00 p.m., the border policemen within Sulina BPS carrying out a mission on the Black Sea noticed, at approximately 47 marine miles abeam of Sfantu Gheorghe locality, a fishing vessel on which fishing activities were developed.
The craft of the Coast Guard project P - 157 intervened in order to carry out the specific control, but the fishing vessel, which was flying a Turkish flag, refused to obey the summons and headed towards the territorial seas of Ukraine.
In order to detain the fishing vessel, the border policemen used their weapons, firing seven warning shots, according to the legal provisions, without victims or damages.
The fishing vessel with seven Turkish sailors aboard was escorted by the craft of the Coast Guard to Sulina Vessel Group, where the through check was carried out.
The border policemen detected thousands of monofilament and commercial fishing nets for which the Turkish sailors could not present legal documents for carrying out fishing activities in the competence area of the Coast Guard.
The Turkish sailors will be investigated for committing fish poaching, deeds foreseen and sanctioned by Art. 64 of GEO 23/2008 modified and approved by Law 317 / 2009.
