Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol on an Official Visit to the Romanian Border Police

From 5 to 6 October 2026, a delegation of the United States of America, led by the Chief of the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP), Mr. Rosario VASQUEZ, paid an official visit to the Romanian Border Police, at the invitation of the Inspector General, Chief Police Quaestor CORNEL-LAURIAN STOICA.

The visit took place in the context of the recent appointment of Mr. Rosario VASQUEZ as head of the U.S. Border Patrol, a structure within U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and aimed to strengthen cooperation between the two institutions and to develop the exchange of experience and best practices in the field of border management and security.

On the first day of the visit, 5 October, the American delegation was received at the headquarters of the General Inspectorate of the Border Police, where the leadership of the two institutions held discussions on the main current challenges in the field of border security and on directions for developing bilateral cooperation.

On this occasion, the delegation visited the Operational Coordination Centre of the General Inspectorate of the Border Police, where Romanian officials presented the institution's organisation and functioning, its main missions and responsibilities, and the capabilities developed for border surveillance and control.

On the second day, 6 October, the visit programme continued in Galați, where the U.S. Border Patrol delegation had the opportunity to observe first-hand how specific activities are carried out at the external border of the European Union.

The American officials visited the Galați–Giurgiulești Road Border Crossing Point, where they were briefed on how border control is organised and carried out, on the flows of travellers and means of transport, and on the equipment and technologies used by border police officers in their day-to-day work.

The programme continued at the Galați Territorial Service of the Border Police, where discussions focused on border surveillance activities, management of the operational situation, and ways of intervening in the various situations encountered at the border. The delegation was also shown an exhibition of state-of-the-art technology and equipment in the Romanian Border Police's inventory, used in border surveillance and control missions.

The delegation also visited the Galați Temporary Screening Centre, where the role and functioning of the centre were presented.

The visits in Bucharest and Galați gave the American delegation an overview of the Romanian Border Police's activity, from the level of central coordination and monitoring to operational activity in the field, at the European Union's external border.

At the end of the visit, the two sides expressed their willingness to continue and deepen cooperation between the Romanian Border Police and the U.S. Border Patrol, by developing professional dialogue and exchanges of experience in areas of common interest, with a view to increasing the capacity to respond to current and future challenges in border security.
