BACKGROUND INFORMATION

On July 24, 1864, ruler Alexandru Ioan Cuza signed the Decree unifying the border guards “on this side and on that side of Milcov”, a moment which became a historic landmark for our institution, meaning the recognition of institutional identity and also the cornerstone of the Border Police of the present.

Through GEO no 104 / 2001 regarding the organization and functioning of the Romanian Border Police, this historic date was established as official day of the Romanian Border Police, being the recognition moment of the institutional identity and also the cornerstone of the modern organization of today, which functions according to the European standards.

In 153 years of existence - and not only, because the defense of the country borders existed since ancient times - the Romanian Border Police undertook several stages of changes and developments depending on the period of time, but regardless of the form of organization or name, the mission remained the same as ever, a sentinel of law, order and calmness at the border.

Currently, as a specialized institution of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Border Police is responsible with the prevention and countering of danger situations against Romania, determined by illegal migration and cross-border crime and also with the defense of life, physical health and freedom of persons, public and private property, other rights and lawful interests of the citizens and community, its activity constituting public service carried out in the interest of the person, of the community and for the support of the state institutions, based exclusively on law enforcement.

Based on the obtained results, the Romanian Border Police continues to be a trustful partner for the European states in the fight against cross-border crime, enjoying the respect and appreciation of the similar structures in other countries, and the professionalism of the border guards and their openness towards collaboration, permanently manifested in the relations with the other structures, had an essential contribution for obtaining these performances and creating a positive image of the institution abroad.
