A rescue mission in extreme conditions at sea, successfully completed.
The flagship “Ștefan cel Mare”, of the Coast Guard, currently on a mission in Italy, in the Joint Operation Themis 2021, coordinated by the FRONTEX Agency, participated together with the Italian authorities in a complex action to save 244 people endangered in the Mediterranean Sea.
The rescue operation took place in severe weather conditions, at night and during heavy storms off the coast of Calabria (Italy).
244 people were rescued, including a newborn and 41 minors traveling in an old wooden fishing boat.
All rescued people were taken safely to the nearest port, where they were picked up by port agents and volunteers.
