In order to ensure the security of the visit of Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI which will take place in Malta, the Maltese authorities decided to reintroduce temporarily the border checks during 05 - 18 April 2010.
The European Union Council informed the General Inspectorate of Border Police that according to Schengen law, the Maltese authorities shall carry out border checks within the Malta International Airport and Valleta Sea Passenger Terminal, during 05.04.2010, 00.01 a.m. - 18.04.2010, 24.00 p.m.
This decision was taken by the Maltese authorities on the occasion of the Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI visit in Malta which is to take place during 17 - 18 April 2010.
The introduction of border checks in Malta will not affect the travel regime of the Romanian citizens intending to travel in the Schengen area and on the territory of the Maltese state.
The General Inspectorate of Border Police recalls to all the Romanian citizens travelling abroad that one of the most important responsibilities is to observe the state law in which they are in, as well as the purpose for which they were granted the access and according to the case, to remain on the territory of that country, under the conditions established by its legislation or by international documents concluded with Romania.
