Frontex Agency deployed in our country in the Joint Operation Terra 2022, over 150 border guards, representatives of the Permanent Body of the Agency and border authorities from other EU countries, who will support the Romanian border authorities in carrying out surveillance missions and border control at the border with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
The organizational details of the operation were discussed by the Inspector General of the Romanian Border Police, Chief Commissioner of Police Ivașcu Victor Ștefan, during a meeting with the Deputy Executive Director of Frontex Agency, Mr. Lars Gerdes, which took place at the General Inspectorate where the operational aspects regarding the conduct of this operation on the border with Ukraine were established.
The Romanian Border Police requested the support of the Frontex Agency for the extension of the Joint Operation Terra 2022, currently carried out on the border with Serbia, and on the Romanian border with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, due to the context in Ukraine and the fact that the situation of people showing up at the entry into the country between the two states is dynamic.
The request is based on the Frontex Regulation (Regulation No 1896/2019 (FRONTEX), Article 37 - Joint Operation), and aims to ensure increased security at the external borders of the European Union.
Frontex Agency responded favorably to the call of the Romanian Border Police, and will deploy in our country over 150 border guards, representatives of the Permanent Body of the Agency and of the border authorities from other EU countries (Germany, Czech Republic, Austria, Denmark, Finland), 60 surveillance cameras and 45 patrol vehicles and equipment for aerial surveillance.
They will participate in the first line of control, in the surveillance and control missions, both at the crossing points and at the land border, together with Romanian border guards from the Border Police sectors that have competence in the border with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova. The agency's representatives will provide support to the Romanian authorities in managing the flow of people entering the country, as well as an effective exchange of experience between European border guards.
