The border police officers from BCP Giurgiu discovered, in a truck with food products, the quantity of 8,700,000 cigarettes (435,000 packs), estimated at a value of over 10.8 million lei, which was to be illegally introduced into the country. The driver of the vehicle was a Bulgarian citizen, and the matter is being investigated under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Giurgiu District Court.
On 18.08.2023, around 8:50 a.m., at the Giurgiu Border Crossing Point, a Bulgarian citizen presented himself to enter the country, driving a truck registered in Bulgaria. According to the documents presented, the driver was transporting food products to Belgium.
Based on the risk analysis, the border police proceeded to unseal the means of transport and carry out a thorough check on its load. Thus, in the cargo compartment, 800 boxes containing 8,700,000 cigarettes (435,000 packs) were discovered hidden behind the goods declared in the documents (cap method).
The cigarettes, with a total value of approximately 10,875,000 lei, were confiscated, and the driver of the truck was detained for 24 hours. Next, the border police officers carry out investigations in the criminal case, under the coordination of the Prosecutor's Office attached to the Giurgiu Court.
