Husband and wife discovered in Siret PTF with $1,400,000 hidden on their bodies

A joint control team, consisting of border police and customs inspectors from the Siret Border Crossing Point, discovered an impressive amount of money - the equivalent of $1,400,000 – hidden on the bodies of two people trying to enter Romania.

Yesterday, June 14, 2025, at around 7:50 p.m., on the way into the country, two people presented themselves at the border control, traveling on foot - a 49-year-old man, a Ukrainian citizen, and his wife, a 39-year-old woman, with dual Romanian-Ukrainian citizenship.

Based on a justified suspicion, the joint control team carried out a thorough check on the two people, and on this occasion significant amounts of money hidden on the bodies of the two people were discovered.

Thus, 810,000 US dollars were found on the man, while 590,000 US dollars were identified on the woman. None of the amounts had been declared in accordance with the legal provisions in force regarding the introduction of foreign currency or national currency cash into the country.

According to legal procedures, the entire amount was retained for further investigation, and the two individuals were fined 15,000 lei each by the Siret Customs Office.

We remind you that bringing into the country amounts greater than 10,000 euros (or the equivalent in another currency) without declaration is prohibited and attracts sanctions, including confiscation of undeclared amounts.

The Romanian Border Police reiterates the importance of complying with customs regulations and encourages citizens to correctly inform themselves before traveling to/from Romania.
