The border guards within Border Crossing Point Petea - Territorial Inspectorate of Border Police Sighetu Marmației together with the employees of Regional Antifraud Directorate Oradea detected in a utility vehicle, driven by a Romanian national, a ton of bulk tobacco, without fiscal markings. The freight was concealed among the boxes containing liquid laundry detergent.
On 13 March 2019, around 10.30, D.H, aged 27, residing in Suceava County, presented in the Border Crossing Point Petea, Satu Mare County, on the entry way, driving a MAN utility vehicle, registered in Romania.
From the first investigations, it was ascertained that the driver was transporting, according to the justifying documents presented for control, laundry detergent and fabric softener.
Acting based on the risk analysis, the border guards together with the employees within the Regional Antifraud Directorate Oradea carried out a thorough check on the vehicle. Thus, among the transported freight, the mixed control team detected 5 pallets on which there were several boxes containing bulk tobacco for which the driver was not able to present any justifying document.
As a result of the tobacco inventory, 1 012 kg amounting to RON 868 000 (approximately EUR 184 000) were detected.
The tobacco was seized and the utility vehicle amounting to RON 332 000 was made unavailable at the HQ of Border Police Sector Petea in order to carry on the investigations.
Also, the driver is investigated for committing possession by other person than the tax warehouse or trading on the Romanian territory of excisable products subject to markings, without marks or fake marks over the limit of a kilogram of bulk tobacco, according to the Fiscal Code.
At the same time, the Romanian citizen was detained for 24 hours; the investigations are carried on under the coordination of a Prosecutor within the Prosecutor’s Office attached to the Court Satu Mare. Upon the completion of the investigations, the legal measures will be undertaken.
