After a rapid operation, initiated at Varsand Border Crossing Point, the border policemen detained 38 Afghan migrants who were intending to get illegally to Schengen Area hidden in a truck transporting vegetables.
On 06.07.2009, around 03.00, at Varsand Border Crossing Point, Arad County, presented on the exit way of the country a freight vehicle registered in Bulgaria, driven by the Greek citizen, Stavros D., aged 38. According to the documents, the fright vehicle was loaded with vegetables (green peppers) from Bulgaria for a commercial society in Belgium.
Based on the risk analysis, the border policemen were suspicious about the cargo of the transportation mean, reason for which they intended to carry out a thorough control.
Then, the border policemen noticed how 30 male persons got out from under the trailer of the freight vehicle, trying to run to the border with Hungary, circumventing the specific control.
Our employees set up rapidly an operative team, who started looking for the fugitives.
Shortly, 38 male persons, with Afghan citizenship, aged between 12 and 30, were detected and detained.
The men were hidden inside the transportation mean, in the front side of the trailer, in a place especially arranged, from where they got out through a hole made in the floor.
Within the preliminary investigations, the migrants stated that they used this method because they didn’t hold a visa for Schengen area and their intention was to get to Italy in order to obtain a work place. The driver stated that he did not know about the existence of the men in the transportation mean.
Currently, all 38 migrants are investigated for committing illegal attempt to cross the border, and the Greek driver for committing trafficking with migrants; at the finalization they will be brought before the Prosecutors in order to take the legal measures.
The investigations are carried on in order to detect the persons involved in the organization and facilitation of the group, as well as to establish the entire criminal activity.
