The Romanian Border Police is also ready to enter the Schengen Area with land borders

Starting January 1, 2025, at the internal border of Romania, respectively at the border with Hungary and Bulgaria, the border control is abolished, meaning that all persons will be able to move to or from other Member States of the Schengen Area (except Cyprus and Ireland) without stopping at the control cabins of the Border Police for the verification of travel documents.

Basically, travel from Romania to and from the other Schengen Member States will be similar to an internal trip.

Border crossing points where the control will be eliminated:

At the Romanian-Bulgarian border:

  • 11 road-specific border crossing points: Giurgiu, Vama Veche, Ostrov, Negru Vodă, Lipnița, Dobromir, Bechet, Calafat, Calarasi, Zimnicea and Turnu Magurele
  • 3 railway specifics: Giurgiu, Negru Voda and Calafat
  • 7 port-specific: Calarasi, Oltenita, Giurgiu, Zimnicea, Turnu Magurele, Corabia and Bechet

At the Romanian-Hungarian border:

  • 12 road-specific border crossing points: Nădlac, Nădlac II, Turnu, Vărșand, Salonta, Borș, Bors II, Valea lui Mihai, Săcuieni, Petea, Urziceni and Cenad
  • 5 railway specific: Carei, Curtici, Salonta, Episcopia Bihor and Valea lui Mihai

Inner Danube:

  • 2 port-specific: Cernavoda and Braila

This applies to all persons, regardless of nationality, and to all categories of means of transport, whether we are talking about tourist cars, coaches, minibuses, trucks, boats or trains.

It is important to note that people who intend to go to the territory of another state must have a valid travel document, namely a passport or identity card.

According to the practice existing at the level of several Member States of the European Union, the Romanian border guards will carry out random and unsystematic checks on the communication routes at the internal border or at various road nodes, within the limit of the 30 km from the border line inside, which is the area of competence, together with colleagues from the Police, Gendarmerie, Immigration or other structures.

Police actions will be carried out on the basis of a risk analysis or when there is information about the possible commission of illegal acts and will aim to prevent and combat illegal acts. The mixed patrols will be equipped with mobile control devices on which the eDAC application will be installed with which they will carry out these checks. If there are no problems in the checks carried out, the person will be able to continue his/her trip without restrictions, otherwise the appropriate legal measures will be applied.

The travel conditions in the states outside the Schengen Area remain unchanged, and the verification of the documents will be carried out at the cabins at the border crossing points.

In order to secure the external borders of Romania, as well as of the European Union and the Schengen area, measures have been taken at the level of the Border Police already in time. The measures consisted of:

  • allocation of human resources: about 90% of the graduates of the Avram Iancu Oradea Agents Training School were assigned to the external borders and about 80% of the competitions organized to fill vacancies in the current year were for the external borders
  • surveillance technique and patrol trucks have been allocated.

Rethinking the device and logistical measures are aimed at protecting citizens,  as well as the judicious use of human resources.

The Romanian Border Police is prepared, from all points of view - organizational, logistical and human, for integration into the Schengen Area by land as of January 1, 2025.
