The participation of the general inspector of the Romanian Border Police at the European Police Congress in Berlin

Mr. Police Quaestor Victor Ştefan IVAŞCU, general inspector of the Romanian Border Police, participated on Wednesday, May 3, 2023, in the panel on the theme "New EU border management: a common task of law enforcement authorities", organized within the European Congress by the Berlin Police.

The panel benefited from the participation of Dr. Lars Gerdes, Deputy Director for Returns and Operations of the FRONTEX Agency, Ms. Isabel Schmitt-Falckenberg, Chief of the German Federal Police and Mr. General Michael Takacz, Chief of the Austrian Federal Police, at the panel discussion. being moderated by Mr. Uwe Proll, editor-in-chief of the Berlin daily Behorden Spiegel, organizers of the event.

In this context, the general inspector of the Romanian Border Police presented the way we carry out the integrated management of Romania's borders, of which over 2000 km are external borders of the European Union, the longest land border of the EU, with applicability to the management of the Ukrainian refugee crisis, as well as on preventing and combating illegal migration.

He also referred to the two pilot projects that we are running this year, namely the pilot project in the field of border management, asylum and return, implemented by Romania and the European Commission at the border with the Republic of Serbia and the pilot project implemented at the border of Romania with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova, together with the FRONTEX Agency, in order to test the planning and implementation of the new operational models on the Frontex Chain of Command for the Permanent Corps.

The discussions were productive in the sense of intensifying the cooperation between the police authorities of the states involved in securing the EU borders.

The 26th Congress of Police Chiefs in Europe benefited from the participation of almost 2000 people from over 20 countries, from high-ranking officials from the Ministries of Interior and Justice, representatives of EU bodies and associations who are active in the field of public order, internal security and defence, representative trade union organizations of the Police in the member states, at manufacturers of logistics equipment and technology for security/public order, media representatives, etc.

The Congress put into public debate the most important topics of the moment: police strategies for combating criminal phenomena and imposing the law; training and equipping law enforcement; the use of modern technology and the exploitation of databases; IT solutions and digitization in police activity; combating cybercrime, economic crime and extremist phenomena; safety in the online environment; EU border security; state-of-the-art communications and law enforcement mobility; the protection of public spaces at large-scale events, in conjunction with ensuring and restoring public order, etc.
