Romanian Border Police, supported by Europol

Today, 22.03.2022, at the headquarters of the General Inspectorate of Border Police took place the visit of some delegations of Europol and the European Commission who expressed their intention to support the Romanian Border Police in terms of managing the situation on the border with Ukraine.

The Europol delegation, led by Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Deputy Executive Director of Operations of the Agency, and the European Commission delegation led by Laurent Muschel, Director of Internal Security, was greeted by the M.I.A. Secretary of State Quaestor General of Police Bogdan Despescu and the Inspector General of the Romanian Border Police, Chief Commissioner of Police Ivaşcu Victor Ştefan.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Inspector General of the Romanian Police, Chief Commissioner of Police Ştefan Andrei Linţă, a representative of the Frontex Agency, as well as the heads of the operative structures specialized in state border surveillance and control, respectively prevention and combating cross-border crime within the General Inspectorate of the Police. of the Romanian Border.

The purpose of the visit was to discuss the technical aspects related to the intention of Europol Agency to second guest officers[1] in Romania, in the first stage, officers specialized in combating illegal migration and human trafficking, part of the European Center for Combating Illegal Migration, in order to providing support to the Border Police.

The action is taking place in the context of the security challenges associated with the humanitarian crisis on the border with Ukraine, in which sense Europol held talks with representatives of the General Inspectorate of Border Police on providing support to Romania by ensuring the presence of agency specialists in various fields of activity. The main objective of the support provided by Europol is to strengthen the national response already articulated at the level of the Romanian authorities in relation to the crisis in Ukraine.

The RBP leadership informed the European officials about the situation on the Romanian borders with Ukraine, respectively the Republic of Moldova and about the support that the European institutions / agencies provide to Romania for managing the specific issues generated in the context of the situation in Ukraine. , on other issues of common interest that may be the subject of future collaboration between the Romanian Border Police and Europol.

We remind you that, at present, the Romanian Border Police benefits from the support of Frontex Agency, which sent over 150 border guards, representatives of the Permanent Body of the Agency and border authorities from other EU countries, to our country within the Joint Operation Terra 2022, as well as surveillance cameras, patrol vehicles and air surveillance equipment to support the Romanian border authorities in carrying out border surveillance and control missions with Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.

[1]Personnel who do not actually participate in surveillance and control activities, but support the field police at the level of the territorial structures in which they will be seconded (information hub) by exchanging information in cases of suspicion regarding certain situations registered at the border.
