One month since Romania's full accession to the Schengen area

During the period 01.01-31.01.2025, during the first month after integration into the Schengen Area with land borders, border guards carried out over 260,000 checks in the eDAC application during random checks carried out in the area of competence, together with colleagues from the Police, Gendarmerie, Immigration, ANAF or other structures with competence within the 30 km limit.

Starting with January 1, 2025, with Romania's full accession to Schengen, internal border control, respectively at the border with Hungary and Bulgaria, has been eliminated, so people traveling from this date within the Schengen area do so without stopping at the Border Police control booths to check their travel documents.

Romanian border police continue to aim to protect citizens and carry out random and unsystematic checks on communication routes at the internal border or at various road junctions.

Thus, border guards carried out over 260,000 checks in the eDAC application, and at the level of internal border structures (territorial inspectorates of the Border Guard of Giurgiu, Oradea, Sighetu Marmației and the Coast Guard), persons from third countries who did not have the right to travel in the Schengen area were discovered, with 142 crimes and 111 contraventions being recorded, as follows:

At the same time, specific missions were also carried out, together with workers from the National Police, Gendarmerie, Immigration or ANAF, of the "BLITZ" type, in the main communication nodes leading to/from border crossing points, in order to establish the validity of the travel conditions and travel documents of persons in traffic.

An example of this is the action of January 3, 2025, when controls were carried out in an integrated system, with mixed teams checking over 3,600 people, in over 1,800 cars, 16 buses, 239 trucks and 161 minibuses. At the same time, joint actions are periodically held with the authorities of the neighboring Schengen countries – Hungary and Bulgaria – in order to intensify cooperation actions at the common border. These joint actions are based on an exchange of information between institutions and contribute to increasing the level of citizen safety, in compliance with Schengen legislation.

A significant result in this regard is the discovery of the 15 migrants discovered on January 29, in the parking lot near the toll station of the Calafat-Vidin bridge, who did not have the necessary documents to travel to the Schengen area.
