Cooperation between border institutions of Romania and the Republic of Moldova

The Minister of Administration and Interior, Constantin Traian Igas, met on 29th of November 2011, in Iasi a delegation of the Republic of Moldova, led by the minister of Internal Affairs, brigade general Alexei Roibu.

In the presence of the two ministers, the Protocol between the Romanian Ministry of Administration and Interior through the General Inspectorate of Border Police and the Border Guards Service of the Republic of Moldova on strengthening the cooperation at central and territorial level, approved by the prime-minister of Romania was signed and the Plan on the development of cooperation between the Romanian and Moldovan border agencies for 2012, respectively.

The document signed by the General Inspector of R.B.P., principal quaestor of police Ioan Buda and the General Director of the Border Guards Service of the Republic of Moldova, major Roman Revenco, represents the juridical basis for cooperation between the two countries for the purpose of preventing and countering cross-border crime, ensuring a climate of safety and public order in the border area.

In this context, the Romanian minister, Traian Igas remarked that "this cooperation sets out actual action directions aiming to counter organized crime, illegal migration, trafficking with persons, trafficking with narcotics, as well as to efficiently ensure security of the E.U. external border".

Within this meeting, the two officials assessed the stage of the cooperation between the two ministries and they discussed about countering illegal migration, smuggling and other criminal phenomena at the border.

The two parties established to continue the procedure of patrolling in integrated system on the river Prut and on the common segment of Danube, based on common plans, for the purpose of countering smuggling with cigarettes, illegal migration and trafficking with stolen vehicles.

At the end of the meeting, the two ministers reinforced the necessity of enhancing cooperation at the border, for countering cross-border organized crime and proposed the next meeting to be trilateral, together with the minister of Interior of Ukraine, at the beginning of 2012, in the Republic of Moldova.

The head of the Department for Schengen, European Affairs and International Relations, police chief quaestor Marian TUTILESCU, the General Inspector of Romanian Border Police, police principal quaestor Ioan Buda, General Inspector of Romanian Police, police quaestor Liviu POPA and the chiefs of the counties inspectorates of border police and national police from the border with the Republic of Moldova, participated in the bilateral discussions.

The Moldovan delegation was made up of the viceminister of Internal Affairs, police major general Iurie CHEPTANARU, general director of the Border Guards Service, major Roman REVENCO, as well as other representatives of Ministry of Internal Affairs and Border Guards Service.
