Approximately 100 people rescued in the Aegean Sea by border policemen during Frontex mission in Greece

The border policemen aboard the MAI 1104 ship of the Coast Guard , stationed in Greece, have successfully carried out two more rescue missions of 97 migrants which were in danger of drowning in the international waters of the Aegean Sea, during the Maritime Joint Operation “Poseidon Rapid Intervention”.

Saturday, on the 23rd of April, at 07.50 o’clock, the MAI 1104 ship, while on mission surveiling the external borders of the European Union, during the Maritime Joint Operation “Poseidon Rapid Intervention”, coordinated by the FRONTEX Agency, received a request from the Local Coordination Center Chios (LCC Chios) to rescue several migrants which were in danger of drowning in the international waters of the Aegean Sea.

The Romanian border policemen commenced the maritime rescue mission, arriving at the indicated location at around 08.40 o’clock, where they identified an inflatable raft which held multiple persons (women, children and men).

After assessing the situation, respectively the risk of sinking, the border policemen transshipped all 49 persons (16 children, 9 women and 24 men) aboard the Coast Guard vessel. Specific procedures for such cases were carried out aboard the ship, the border policemen offering the migrants assistance, first aid and food.

At 11.05, the migrants were disembarked at the Chios harbor and turned over to the Greek authorities for carrying out specific procedures.

Saturday night, the crew on board MAI 1104 identified another inflatable vessel which held 48 people (13 children, 12 women and 23 men). The border policemen have, yet again, rescued and transshipped the persons in distress on board the ship, granting them assistance and food, and, later on, transporting them safely to the Chios harbor, where they were turned over to the Greek authorities.

After finalizing the action the MAI 1104 vessel continued its mission within the Frontex operation.
